Trust Alliance New Zealand’s earliest research investigated how agricultural producers, processors, exporters, financial institutions, retailers and regulators could exchange trusted information across organisational boundaries.
Working with consortium participants and technology partners, TANZ explored a shared digital infrastructure that would enable participating organisations to retain control of their information while adopting common standards for identity, data definitions, verification and access.
Agricultural information was distributed across independent systems, making it difficult to consistently identify farms, connect production and compliance information, verify provenance or reuse trusted information between organisations.
The programme investigated:
Early architectural investigations included blockchain-based infrastructure and off-chain data storage, with later work examining verifiable credentials and identity governance.
The research established an early conceptual and architectural foundation for TANZ’s subsequent work on digital farm identity, agricultural data interoperability and participant-controlled information sharing.
The programme helped identify the importance of persistent agricultural identifiers, trusted data sources, common governance arrangements and verifiable authority.
These principles subsequently informed TANZ’s Digital Farm Wallet research and the evolution towards FarmID and governed agricultural intelligence.
TANZ does not retain ownership of intellectual property developed through this project. Project intellectual property is either made available under open-source arrangements or remains the property of participating TANZ members, subject to the relevant project agreements.
