Klaeri SchelhoweWellington, New Zealand – 15. February 2022 – The board of Trust Alliance NZ has appointed Klaeri Schelhowe as Executive Director to lead the incorporated society.

Trust Alliance NZ (TANZ) is an established open industry consortium working cooperatively to find ways to share data more efficiently in a controlled and permissioned way. TANZ is particularly focused on the primary sector and developing open solutions for easing the overwhelming need for sharing information amongst numerous stakeholders but doing so in a way which maintains control over information and ensures trust between parties.

Originally formed as an unincorporated society at the end of 2019, TANZ was officially incorporated in August 2021. TANZ combines the public and private sector and is growing rapidly as more industry organisations see the benefits to taking a co-operative, open standards approach to addressing data interoperability and data sharing.

Klaeri was a co-founder of the initial TANZ consortium and was instrumental in driving the start-up phase. She has been leading multiple work streams for TANZ members such as Digital Identity and Digital Farm Environment Planning. Klaeri has also been undertaking complementary work with AgriTech NZ, MPI, DIA and MBIE.

Initially from a farming background in her native Germany, Klaeri has worked for decades in international technology companies focused on product identification and traceability, with a heavy involvement in the complexities of the food supply chain. Klaeri has an in-depth knowledge of the value chain across primary production, food processing and the supply chain, with a strong focus on data management, manufacturing process, and end-user engagement.

Chris Claridge, Chair of TANZ, said “We are delighted to have Klaeri on board as Executive Director, she brings the right skill-set and experience plus a real hands-on approach, and we look forward to working with her to further growing and developing the Trust Alliance. Our initial focus will be advancing the current application workstreams and finalising our recently launched software development kits. With these kits our members will deploy decentralised identifiers and verifiable credentials as the first step towards enabling data sharing in a permissioned and trustworthy way and making life easier for farmers and growers.”

Klaeri said, “Working with the Trust Alliance members has been a fantastic experience. The energy and enthusiasm of our members for solving the problems faced by New Zealand’s primary producers is the basis of our success. I am really looking forward to the next stages as we start to roll out technology solutions and focus on execution and delivery.”

About TANZ:

The Trust Alliance NZ Inc. (TANZ) is a non-profit organisation with over 35 members from both the private and public sector.

The objective of TANZ is to build trust and value between the primary industry, retailers, consumers and government in order to preserve & enhance its global & domestic competitiveness through develop and provide technology such as tools protocols and decentralised infrastructure to enable the users to:

  • Capture data once
  • Share in a trustworthy permissioned way
  • Control and secure the data as required
  • Enhance data ownership and easy management

for the benefit of:

  • Enhancing sustainable farming by providing better decision-making
  • Providing consumers with improved information to verify product quality and attributes.
  • Increasing efficiency & productivity across the value chain through better measuring and reporting.
  • Mitigating risk for all stakeholders in the ecosystem with controlled transparency.

Today there is no easy mechanism for farmers and supply chain intermediaries to easily capture data once, share it in a trustworthy and permissioned way, maintaining and providing the data required by government, supply chain stakeholders and other entities such as research groups or buyers. The existing data processes are risky, inefficient, unproductive and time wasting.

The opportunity is achieving data interoperability in a way which is easy to use and control by the data generators and owners. It will help strengthen NZ’s Primary Industry and drive sustainability through productivity and improved decision making. It will assist consumer purchasing with improved information regarding the provenance, evidence of sustainability, food safety and other attributes that influence buyer behaviour.

A starting point is to turn compliance work into a value-added activity for the sector through better data interoperability and digital automation that reduces data entry, compliance costs, provides trust, promotes better environmental outcomes, and improves efficiency with enhanced data sovereignty.

TANZ progresses the decentralised approach by enabling the members to provide digital identity to their user as prerequisite for data sharing mechanism and improve the current situation dramatically for their users.
